The palace was constructed between 1705 and 1722 and was a gift from Queen Anne to John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, in recognition of his military achievements. The palace was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, two of the most prominent architects of the time, and is considered to be a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture.
The palace is surrounded by 2,000 acres of landscaped parkland, which features a lake, formal gardens, and an impressive collection of sculptures.
