Amberley Museum is a fascinating open-air museum set in a former chalk quarry and limeworks in the heart of the South Downs. Spanning 36 acres, it brings the South’s industrial and rural heritage vividly to life. Visitors can explore more than 40 exhibition areas, from working print and pottery workshops to the blacksmith’s forge and traditional crafts. The museum’s narrow-gauge railway and historic bus service offer charming rides around the site, while exhibits such as the Electricity Hall, Telecommunications Hall and “Life and Lime” displays tell the story of how industry shaped both the site and the local community. With its blend of indoor and outdoor attractions, woodland walks, and open spaces, Amberley Museum is perfect for visitors of all ages to explore, learn, and enjoy at a relaxed pace.

For food and refreshments, the museum’s Limeburners Café offers a welcoming stop for homemade meals, light bites, and freshly baked cakes. The menu includes breakfast baps, sandwiches, hot dishes, and children’s options, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices available. On busy days, extra refreshment points such as the Pepper Lane Stop provide drinks and snacks around the site, and visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy at the many outdoor seating areas. With its mix of heritage, hands-on exhibits, and relaxing spaces, Amberley Museum makes for a full and enjoyable day out.
