Annie is one of the world’s most loved musicals. It is based on the 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray. The stage musical premiered on Broadway in 1977, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and book by Thomas Meehan. It was an immediate success, winning seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. The original Broadway Annie was played by Andrea McArdle, and the show quickly became famous for its uplifting score, particularly the song Tomorrow. In 1982, Annie was adapted into a major film, further cementing its popularity worldwide. Since then, the musical has enjoyed numerous revivals, UK tours and international productions, remaining a firm family favourite for nearly 50 years.
