Set in the heart of beautiful Wiltshire countryside, Bowood House & Gardens is a stunning stately home surrounded by 100 acres of landscaped parkland designed by the legendary Capability Brown. The estate is home to the Lansdowne family and offers a fascinating glimpse into English heritage, art, and architecture.

Inside the Georgian house, visitors can explore elegant rooms filled with family heirlooms, fine art, and historical treasures—including relics from Napoleon and Queen Victoria. The remarkable Library, Sculpture Gallery, and Chapel all reflect the grandeur of the 18th century. The gardens are a highlight in themselves: sweeping lawns, tranquil lakes, and vibrant borders frame the magnificent Rhododendron Walks (open seasonally), while the formal terraces near the house burst with colour through spring and summer.

Accessibility

Much of Bowood’s parkland and gardens are accessible, with gentle slopes and firm paths around the terraces and lake. Some woodland areas can be uneven. Accessible parking and toilets are available, and the ground floor of the House is wheelchair friendly (upper floor by stairs only).

Bowood House, located in the picturesque Wiltshire countryside, is a stately home with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. It has been the ancestral seat of the Lansdowne family since 1754 and remains a fine example of Georgian architecture. The house was initially designed by Henry Keene and later expanded by the renowned architect Robert Adam. Its interiors are adorned with elegant plasterwork, period furnishings, and an impressive collection of fine art, including Old Master paintings and family portraits.

One of Bowood's most notable historical contributions is its association with Joseph Priestley, who discovered oxygen in 1774 while working as a tutor to the Lansdowne children in the estate’s laboratory. The grounds, designed by the legendary landscape architect Capability Brown, feature rolling parklands, a serpentine lake, and exquisite gardens that have enchanted visitors for centuries. Today, Bowood House stands as a remarkable blend of history, art, and natural beauty, offering a captivating experience for those who explore its storied halls and stunning landscapes.
