Brooklands, located in Weybridge, Surrey, holds a remarkable place in British history as the site of the worlds first purpose-built motor racing circuit, which opened in 1907. Created by Hugh Fortescue Locke King, this 2.75-mile track with its iconic banked curves quickly became a hub for early motor racing and speed records, drawing spectators and competitors from around the world. The sites connection to aviation began shortly after its opening, when pioneering pilots used the tracks infield for takeoffs and landings, eventually turning Brooklands into a focal point for British aviation innovation. By World War I, Brooklands had established itself as a vital center for aircraft manufacturing, with major firms like Vickers and Sopwith producing military aircraft on-site. This dual heritage of motorsport and aviation continued to flourish, making Brooklands a dynamic center for technological advancements throughout the 20th century.
Today, Brooklands Museum preserves and celebrates this rich history with a vast collection of historic vehicles, aircraft, and artifacts that reflect its legacy. The museum features restored sections of the original racetrack, where visitors can appreciate the pioneering spirit of early motor racing, as well as aircraft displays showcasing iconic models such as the Vickers Wellington bomber and the BAC Concorde. Exhibits delve into the achievements of legendary drivers and pilots associated with Brooklands, highlighting record-breaking feats and the evolution of automotive and aeronautical engineering. Through interactive displays, guided tours, and restoration projects, Brooklands Museum offers an immersive experience, allowing visitors to explore the incredible contributions made at this historic site to British motorsport and aviation.
