Spend some time in Battle,  a small historic town in East Sussex best known as the site of the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066, when the Norman forces of William the Conqueror defeated the English army led by Harold Godwinson. Following his victory, William ordered the construction of Battle Abbey on the battlefield as an act of penance and to commemorate the battle. Today the town is centred around the abbey and retains a charming historic atmosphere, with traditional buildings, independent shops, and cafés lining its main street. Surrounded by the rolling countryside of East Sussex, Battle attracts visitors interested in English history as well as those looking to explore the beautiful landscape where one of the most significant events in the nation’s past took place.

After our visit to Battle, we move to Hastings, a delightful blend of seaside charm and rich heritage, Hastings offers a picturesque mix of sweeping coastal views, a lively beach promenade, and the quirky character of its historic Old Town. Visitors can wander past colourful fishing boats on the shingle beach, explore narrow medieval streets filled with independent shops and cafés, ride the dramatic cliffside funiculars, or simply relax and enjoy the laid-back coastal atmosphere—making it a perfect destination for a refreshing and scenic day out.

Accessibility

Some areas of Battle may be challenging due to the historic landscape. The abbey grounds and battlefield include gravel and grass paths, uneven terrain, and some steep slopes, which may make certain parts difficult for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

Hastings is largely accessible, with wide, level paths along the seafront and step-free access to the pier. The Old Town has some uneven historic streets, but the main areas remain manageable, and the cliff lifts provide an easy alternative to steep hills when operating.

In Hastings, there’s plenty to see and do for visitors of all tastes. History enthusiasts can explore the atmospheric Hastings Old Town with its cobbled streets, timber-framed buildings, and boutique shops, or visit the impressive Smugglers Adventure for a unique underground experience. The seafront offers a lively promenade, the iconic Hastings Pier, and plenty of traditional seaside fun. Foodies will enjoy a range of cafés, gastropubs, and seafood restaurants, while independent shops, art galleries, and vintage stores provide hours of browsing in the charming Old Town and surrounding streets. Whether strolling along the beach, sampling local delicacies, or discovering local crafts, Hastings combines history, culture, and coastal charm in one vibrant town.
