The sculptures by the River Leake are part of a captivating outdoor art trail known as the Sculpture by the Lakes, this private sculpture park is set within 26 acres of stunning countryside and features an impressive collection of contemporary sculptures integrated into the natural landscape.
The park was created by renowned sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wife, Monique. The setting is tranquil and immersive, with a network of lakes, gardens, and woodland paths that provide the perfect backdrop for the carefully curated artworks. Gudgeon's own sculptures are prominently featured, but the park also showcases the work of other contemporary artists, creating a diverse and engaging experience for visitors.
The sculptures within the park vary in style and material, ranging from large, imposing pieces to more delicate and subtle works. Simon Gudgeon's works often explore themes of nature, balance, and harmony, with his smooth, flowing forms blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. His most famous work, Isis, a sleek, abstract depiction of a bird in flight, is a striking example of his ability to capture the essence of movement and serenity.
Many of the sculptures are positioned to interact with their environment, whether it's a reflective lake surface, a wooded glade, or an open meadow. The natural surroundings complement the art, creating moments of reflection and contemplation as visitors wander through the space. The parks carefully designed gardens and water features enhance the sense of peace and connection to nature.
Sculpture by the Lakes is known for offering a peaceful and contemplative experience, distinct from more traditional sculpture parks or galleries. The park is intentionally quiet, with a limit on the number of visitors allowed each day to preserve the serene atmosphere. Unlike some outdoor art installations, Sculpture by the Lakes encourages visitors to take their time, enjoy the scenery, and experience the art in a personal and meditative way.
In addition to the sculptures, the park includes a gallery space known as **The Gallery by the Lakes**, where smaller works of art, paintings, and other sculptures are exhibited. There is also a café offering locally sourced food, making it easy to spend an entire day immersed in art and nature.
