Our day begins at Shepton Mallet Prison, a historic former prison with over 400 years of fascinating history. On arrival, enjoy coffee and cake before joining our guided tour of the prison. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we’ll step behind the imposing walls and hear captivating stories of prison life through the centuries, exploring the cell blocks, exercise yards and other areas of this atmospheric site while discovering tales of some of its most notorious inmates and remarkable events.
We then make the short journey to Wells, England’s smallest cathedral city. Enjoy free time to explore at your own pace, perhaps visiting the magnificent Wells Cathedral, strolling around the historic Market Place and picturesque Vicars’ Close, browsing the independent shops or simply relaxing in one of the city’s welcoming cafés. You may also choose to visit the beautiful Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, situated alongside the cathedral.
With fascinating history in the morning and plenty of time to enjoy one of Somerset’s most attractive cities in the afternoon, this promises to be a wonderfully varied day out.
