The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth, located in the beautiful countryside of East Devon, is a popular and heartwarming destination dedicated to the care and protection of donkeys and mules. Founded in 1969 by Dr. Elisabeth Svendsen, the sanctuary has grown into an international charity that rescues, rehabilitates, and provides lifelong care for thousands of donkeys and mules in need.
The Donkey Sanctuary is set across a sprawling 260-acre site. It offers a peaceful and picturesque environment where visitors can enjoy the company of hundreds of donkeys, explore the natural surroundings, and learn about the sanctuarys mission.
One of the main highlights of the sanctuary is the opportunity to meet and interact with the donkeys. Visitors can stroll through the paddocks and meet many of the friendly residents, learning their individual stories and personalities. The donkeys are well cared for, and the sanctuary provides a safe haven for those that have been rescued from neglect, cruelty, or hard labor. Meeting these gentle animals is both a fun and educational experience, especially for families and animal lovers.
The sanctuary features a series of well-marked walking trails that take visitors through the scenic grounds, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and coastline. There are paths suitable for all abilities, and some trails take you through quiet, wooded areas and along rolling hills, where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature.
The on-site The Kitchen Café offers delicious locally sourced food and provides a relaxing space for visitors to enjoy refreshments while overlooking the beautiful grounds. There is also a gift shop filled with donkey-themed gifts, souvenirs, and products, with all profits supporting the sanctuarys ongoing work.
