Stourhead

Stourhead

Stourhead National Trust is a breathtaking blend of art and nature, where winding paths lead to lakeside temples and timeless beauty unfolds at every turn.

View Dates & Book

Set in the rolling Wiltshire countryside near Mere, Stourhead is one of England’s most breathtaking landscape gardens, often described as a “living painting.” Created in the 18th century by Henry Hoare II, it’s a perfect example of the English landscape garden movement — where nature, art, and architecture blend seamlessly.

At the heart of the estate lies a magnificent lake, encircled by lawns, classical temples, grottos, and winding woodland paths. Every turn reveals a new, carefully framed view — reflections on the water, ancient trees, and ornamental buildings like the Pantheon, Temple of Apollo, and Palladian Bridge.

Accessibility

Stourhead offers good access for visitors with limited mobility. The main visitor buildings — café, shop, and toilets — are wheelchair accessible, and mobility scooters can be hired (advance booking advised). The lakeside garden walk has some gentle and steeper slopes, with step-free routes to key viewpoints such as the Pantheon and Palladian Bridge. Accessible parking and a drop-off point are available near the entrance, and staff are very helpful in advising on suitable routes.

Stourhead, one of the National Trust’s most enchanting estates, is a stunning landscape garden famed for its serene lake, classical temples, and vibrant displays of seasonal color. The sweeping grounds invite visitors to wander through woodlands, cross charming bridges, and take in views that look like scenes from a painting. After exploring, guests can relax in the Stourhead café, which serves freshly prepared meals, homemade cakes, and locally sourced treats in a warm and welcoming setting. The nearby shop offers a delightful range of gifts, plants, and local produce, making it the perfect place to take a piece of Stourhead’s beauty home.
