Arundel is a market town and civil parish in the Arun District of the South Downs, West Sussex, England. The much-conserved town has a medieval castle and Roman Catholic cathedral. Arundel museum is coveiniently located in the coach park, the town comes second only to the much larger City of Chichester in its number of listed buildings in West Sussex.
Arundel Castle is a grand medieval castle built in 1067 by Roger de Montgomery, one of William the Conquerors most trusted barons, the castle is one of the longest inhabited country houses in the UK. Over the centuries, it has been the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, with extensive restorations and expansions. The castle showcases a mix of Norman, Gothic, and Victorian architectural styles due to its various phases of construction and renovation. The original Norman keep is a central feature, sitting atop a motte with thick stone walls and crenellations. The Keep The oldest part of the castle, it offers panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, including the River Arun. The castle is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens, including the Fitzalan Chapel Garden and the Collector Earl's Garden, which is known for its formal design and exotic plants. The castle interiors are richly decorated with fine paintings, tapestries, and period furnishings, reflecting its noble heritage. Key rooms include the Barons' Hall, the Drawing Room, and the Library. The Fitzalan Chapel, within the castle grounds, is a Gothic-style chapel that still serves as the burial place for the Dukes of Norfolk.
