Athelhampton House & Gardens offers accessible parking, level access to the visitor centre, shop, restaurant and toilets, plus wheelchair-friendly routes through much of the gardens. Some historic areas and upper floors are not accessible.

 

 

Athelhampton House is a breathtaking Tudor manor with roots reaching back to the late 15th century. Built around 1485 by Sir William Martyn, a prominent lawyer and former Mayor of London, the house stands today as one of England’s finest examples of Tudor architecture. Despite centuries of additions and restorations, it retains an unmistakable medieval atmosphere and timeless character.

At the heart of the house lies the impressive Great Hall, with its soaring timber roof, grand stone fireplace, and beautifully carved wood panelling—an unforgettable showcase of Tudor craftsmanship. The exterior features hallmark Tudor elements, including tall, slender windows, striking gables, and an elegant blend of stone and brick.

The estate is equally celebrated for its extraordinary formal gardens. Renowned for their dramatic pyramid-shaped yew trees, the gardens were laid out in the late 19th century and offer a series of charming spaces such as the Great Court, peaceful terraces, reflective water features, and vibrant seasonal planting.

Inside, visitors can explore a collection of stately rooms furnished with period pieces, tapestries, and artwork, each offering a window into the refinement and grandeur of historic English country life.
