Boarding and Alighting Vehicles

Personal Injury:

- Slips, trips and falls

All staff and passengers

- Driver to pickup/set down in a safe area

- Driver to use vehicle kneel facility when necessary

- Driver to make sure vehicle step and floor area clear

- Driver to ensure vehicle interior well illuminated

- Aisles not to be obstructed

- Party leaders to inform all passengers to board in a slow and controlled manner to ensure their safety

On Board Luggage Stowage

Personal Injury:

- Objects falling from height

- Exits blocked

- Restricted access and egress

All staff and passengers

- Maximum of 7kg stored overhead

- No glass objects

- Party leaders to access all internal baggage requirements

- Driver has the right to refuse any oversized baggage onboard in the interest of passenger safety

Under Vehicle Stowage

- Luggage loading and unloading

Personal Injury:

- Back injuries

- Sprains and strains

All staff, passengers and party leaders

- Only driver to load luggage into the vehicle luggage compartment

- Driver training – luggage good practice guide

- Passengers or party leaders must make drivers aware of heavy luggage

- Driver to ensure luggage area is clear before closing lockers

Vehicle Breakdown

- Modern and well-maintained fleet and extensive fleet support (24hr)

- Scania/Volvo UK/ European Breakdown cover (24hr)

- Drivers trained in breakdown procedures/ best practices

- Driving times limited to legal maximums (monitored and controlled)

- All coaches and drivers carry mobile phones

- Passengers are moved to a place of safety if appropriate/ move forward in vehicle in event of passengers staying on coach

- Use hazard warning lights and warning triangles

Passenger Behaviour and Safety

Personal Injury:

- Crush injuries

- Slips, trips and falls

- Distraction of the driver

- Distraction of other road user (passenger windows)

All staff and passengers

- Teachers and Party leaders to be responsible for the overall behaviour and safety of the passengers in their care

- Driver has the right to stop the coach in the interest of passenger safety

- Seatbelts must be worn

- Passengers must be remain seated and forward facing at all times

- Toilet facilities must be used in a matter of urgency

- Driver to be made aware of toilet request

- No alcohol to be consumed onboard

Driver Performance

Personal Injury

All passengers

- All drivers are DBS checked

- All drivers are CPC (driver) trained and licenced

- All drivers to have adequate breaks and to comply with driving regulation (VOSA)

- Alcohol and drug policy – regular spot checks with breathalysers

- All drivers receive clear instruction and guidance before trip departure

- Tachograph records externally monitored

Road Traffic Incident

- Identify emergency exits to passengers before journey starts

- Keep aisles and exits clear

- All passengers to wear seatbelts

- Passengers are moved to a place of safety if appropriate/ move forward in vehicle in event of passengers staying on coach

- Use hazard warning lights and warning triangles

-  Liase with teaching staff to ensure supervision of students

- Call the emergency services and request appropriate service required

- Inform office of incident – office manned 24/7

- First aid kit supplied on all vehicles
